Networking Parents past conference call entitled, “Transitioning to Work: Returnships and Other Strategies," took place on December 4, 2008.
Steven Rod, Vice-President of Professional Development Services, JCCA, spoke about re-entering the workplace by gaining volunteer experience or beginning part-time work and referencing the JCC as a transitional career option. This call also focused on a recent article in the Chicago Tribune, “Helping Parents Back to Work” which discusses the idea of “returnships,” an idea modeled after internships but shaped for individuals re-entering the workforce after stopping out.
Bio:
Steven J. Rod has held the position of vice-president of professional development services for JCC Association since July 1995. Previously, he was the director of executive development and director of training for the JCC Association from 1988 through 1995. Steven has served as the executive director of the Omaha JCC and assistant executive director of the Minneapolis JCC. He also held program positions at the Rochester, NY and Metrowest, NJ JCCs. From 1986 to 1988 he served as Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of Omaha, prior to joining the JCC Association staff.
In his current capacity, he is concerned with all matters dealing with professional personnel in the Jewish Community Center field. This includes recruitment and placement of quality professionals; methods of staff retention; changes in personnel practice; study and publication of trends, educational requirements, and staff development and training. He serves as an executive coach and mentor, and works closely with many JCC Presidents and Executive Directors. He is the Director of JCC Association’s annual Executive Seminars, a five-day learning experience for JCC executives.

Who We Are
JCSA Networking Parents, organized in 2003, links Jewish communal professionals who are taking time off to raise young children. These parents wish to remain connected to their careers in the Jewish community while at home full or part-time.
JCSA Networking Parents provides programs, employment support and advocacy for family-friendly policies to keep participants connected and informed, assuring their successful re-entry into the field. This diverse group, both geographically and professionally, includes educators, rabbis, social workers, planners, fundraisers and others from all corners of the continent.
What We Do
JCSA Networking Parents addresses the professional needs, as well as the concerns of the communal agenda, by keeping participants connected and informed through a network of Jewish communal professionals. JCSA Networking Parents provides an opportunity to:
- continue professional growth and development
- advocate and educate for family-friendly policies in the Jewish workplace
- share knowledge and resources
- learn of employment opportunities (part/full-time, flex time, job sharing, consulting) in the Jewish community
- study professional articles and Jewish texts
- utilize professional skills for volunteer activities
- ease professional’s re-entry to the workplace
Through these supports, a vital resource of the community is sustained and retained for volunteer and future professional engagement.

Meet a few of the JCSA Networking Parents
Ann Hartman Luban: JCSA Networking Parents, Co-Chair
Ann Hartman Luban is a licensed clinical social worker and the former director of Holocaust Community Services, a citywide collaborative program of Council for Jewish Elderly, Jewish Family and Community Service and the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, that serves Holocaust survivors and their families.
Ann earned her MSW from the University of Southern California and a Master of Arts in Jewish Communal Service from Hebrew Union College and is an alumnus of the Wexner Graduate Fellowship Program and the Wexner Heritage Foundation. During her ten years at Council for Jewish Elderly, she provided clinical services for individuals, couples, families and groups, supervised graduate students and provided clinical consultation on aging issues. She has presented at numerous local, national and international conferences, published articles in both print and on-line formats and taught several adult Jewish education courses.
Ann is currently a JCSA board member, and helped to found Jewish Communal Professionals of Chicago. She is a Vice-President of Chicago Jewish Day School, a new community elementary school, and a former Vice-President of her synagogue. Ann lives in Chicago with her husband Michael, a chiropractor. Leslie Rosen Stern: JCSA Networking Parents, Co-Chair
Leslie Rosen Stern is the former Director of the Department of Alternatives in Jewish Education at the Community Foundation for Jewish Education of Metropolitan Chicago.
Leslie earned her MSW from Columbia University in New York and a Master of Arts in Jewish Studies from the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. After completing her studies, she spent four years coordinating programming and outreach efforts to engage Jewish young professionals and young families in New York City. Upon relocating to Chicago in 1998, she began five significant years of service for the Community Foundation for Jewish Education of Metropolitan Chicago as its first director for the Department of Alternatives in Jewish Education. At CFJE, she coordinated various and stimulating initiatives in informal Jewish education, adult education, professional development and community-wide programming.
She also developed the programming and orientation for students and staff of the agency’s largest program, "Ta'am Yisrael: A Taste of Israel," which sent more than 300 eighth-graders to Israel for a one-week immersion experience.
Leslie is currently a volunteer with the National Council of Jewish Women’s (Chicago North Shore Section) Domestic Violence Courtwatch Program whose mission is to contribute an impartial assessment of the effectiveness and efficiency of the Domestic Violence Court and the quality of its judges and personnel, and to advocate for needed community services for families involved in domestic violence.

Lynne Kanner: JCSA Networking Parents, Co-Chair
Lynne Anapolle Kanner worked for UJA-Federation directing the Young Women's and Families Division where she also managed the Manhattan Women's Campaign raising $8 million annually. Currently, Lynne is working part-time for the Sid-Jacobson JCC running Social Skills Groups for elementary age children with special needs. She also volunteers as a parent member for the Roslyn School District for their special needs department, volunteers for the Old Westbury Hebrew Congregation Nursery School PTA, and sits on the board for Ahavas Achim Anshi Koretz Cemetery Corporation.
Lynne received her Masters of Social Work at Columbia University and her Masters of Judaic Studies from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Before graduate school she worked at the Hillel of Pittsburgh as its Program Director for Carnegie Mellon University and University of Pittsburgh reaching out to hundreds of college students.
